GRAUZARIA ALPINE REFUGE M.1250

The Grauzaria Refuge

The Refuge is located at the foot of the sheer northern walls of Creta Grauzaria and Cima di Gjai; it rests on a wooded ledge at the head of the Rio Flop valley. With its beds and traditional cuisine, it is an excellent base for visitors to this area of the Carnic Alps.

The History of the Grauzaria Refuge

Already at the beginning of the 1900s, there was a need to build a shelter to make the climbs to the Sernio Grauzaria group easier. After the war, when the mountain pastures were abandoned, this need became even more urgent. Within the CAI section of Moggio Udinese, discussions began about the possibility of building a refuge. Inspections followed and projects were proposed, and the members were called to a referendum to choose the most suitable place to build it.

In 1954, the section was able to use the sum of one million lire, received from the heirs of Renzo Stabile. Later, thanks to the generosity of companies, private individuals, and the Municipality of Moggio, and thanks to the sacrifices of volunteers who worked on the construction site for several seasons, the CAI section of Moggio Udinese, on the occasion of the first centenary of the Italian Alpine Club, inaugurated the refuge: it was August 4, 1963.
